The Ultimate Guide to Post-Winter Haircare

Breathe new life into your dull, dry-looking strands.

It's no secret that winter's bitter cold and harsh winds can do a number on our mane, robbing it of much-needed moisture similar to our skin. Pair that with frequent exposure to artificial heating and it's easy to understand why our strands look a little worse for wear after a long, frigid winter. As we (finally!) begin to embrace spring's warmth, there's no better time than now to get our mane back in tip-top shape. To that end, we're sharing the best ways to care for parched strands post-winter, ahead.

Tip #1: Hydrate with Masks Weekly

If you've never tried a hydrating hair mask before, now is definitely the time to start. These deep-conditioning formulas add a boost of moisture, helping super-dry hair feel nourished and restored. If you love to multi-task, reach for an overnight hair mask that can get to work while you snooze.

Tip #2: Ditch the Heat

The weather may not be the only culprit to your dry, damaged strands. Heat from styling tools-think: curling irons, blow-dryers, and flat irons-and steamy showers can also wreak havoc, so it's wise to cut back on applying direct heat to your strands. Save these tools for special occasions rather than daily use. If you absolutely must blow-dry, use the lowest heat setting and always apply a heat protectant product first. When showering, turn the water temperature down from scalding hot to lukewarm (or cold, if you can handle it!). It may feel less relaxing, but it can make a big impact on your hair.

Tip #3: Be Gentle When Brushing

Being too aggressive while brushing your knotty strands can actually lead to unwanted damage, so be gentle! To detangle your strands, opt for a boar bristle brush. These softer bristles can help distribute your scalp's natural oils from the root down to the ends.

Tip #4: Shampoo in Moderation

Do you shampoo your hair every day? Consider dialing back the frequency to once or twice per week, especially if your strands are already dry. Shampooing too often can wash away natural oils your scalp produces, resulting in dry, dull, and brittle hair. When you do shampoo, reach for one that's formulated for dry or damaged hair, like L'Oreal Professionnel Absolut Repair Lipidium Shampoo. The right shampoo can help your hair feel clean and soft, and look shiny and healthy! Be sure to follow up with conditioner to help restore and replenish moisture.

Tip #5: Get Regular Trims

Are your ends damaged? Kick them to the curb with regular trims. When you're ready to give your damaged ends a chop, pencil in an appointment with your hairstylist. Spring is the perfect time to give your hair an upgrade, so feel free to discuss new cuts and styles during your appointment. Your stylist will be able to make suggestions as to what kind of haircut will work best for your hair type and face shape.
