The messy chignon is quickly becoming a modern classic: It's quick and easy to fashion, there are unlimited variations, and it always looks chic.

Whether you wear it to the office, date night, after-work drinks, or on a weekend adventure, this hairstyle lends a touch of sophistication to a laid-back look. New York City stylist and L'Oréal Professionnel artist Amit Abraham says this is the "it" style of the modern generation. "I think when people look back at our time now, just as the 90's had 'the Rachel,' the millennium will be known for variations of the top knot and the man bun."
Mist a matte-finish texturizing spray into dry hair to create some messy volume. Then, pull your hair back into a ponytail, carefully choosing a spot that works best for your face shape (higher tends to be more dramatic while a lower chignon feels a bit more relaxed). Wrap the ponytail into a messy bun, pin in place, and pull out a few flyaways by rubbing the bun with the palm of your hand. Finish with a light-hold hairspray or texturizer.
"Not only is the messy chignon easy to pull off, it works in so many different venues," Abraham says. Dress it up by pairing it with a fancy cocktail dress or dress it down on casual Friday: "It gives a great complement to whatever you're wearing-you can wear it with jeans and a T-shirt and it still looks good."
