6 Simple Ways to Get Your Brown Hair to Shine Bright

Easy tricks to get glossier hair.

While this year we're seeing trendy colors like blorange and peach, at the end of the day a classic brunette is always in style. If you've decided to refresh or update your hair color and embrace a classic brunette shade, it's time to focus on keeping that beautiful brown hue polished and fresh. Thankfully we've tapped the experts to discover simple ways to get glossy brunette hair... that lasts!

Get a Gloss

The best way to keep your brunette hair color looking shiny is to go for a gloss at the salon. Tone-on-tone glosses are demi-permanent hair colors that enhance your shade, boost color, and add mega-watt shine. Unlike permanent haircolor, glosses gradually fade away over time so you don't have to worry about visible grown-out roots. "[Glosses add] shine and beautiful color, they help make highlights stand out, enhance natural color, and make the hair look healthier, " explains hairdresser and L'Oréal Professionnel Artist DJ McGinley. "They also last up to eight weeks before you have to go back, which is longer than the every 4-5 week root touch-up appointments required with single-process color."

Start in the Shower

Brilliantly radiant brunette hair starts in the shower. If you've been using a traditional shampoo you may want to consider swapping it out for a color-safe option. Regular shampoos can strip your hair of moisture and even fade your new hair color, causing it to look dry and dull. Try a shampoo and conditioner system designed for colored hair like Vitamino Color AO-X. Once a week reach for a deep conditioning hair mask to help add moisture and shine.

Brave the Cold

While those steamy showers may feel nice, that hot water can end up dulling your color and dehydrating your strands. Instead of turning up the heat, if you want glossy hair consider braving the cold! Wash and condition your strands using lukewarm water and when you're ready for that final rinse turn the water to as chilly a temp as you can handle. The cold water helps to seal the cuticle on each strand which helps it to better reflect light and look glossy and radiant!

Style...the Right Way

While a flat iron may seem like a temporary way to get glossy looking hair, excessive heat styling can cause your hair to appear dull, dry, and lifeless. To avoid heat damage, try to save the use of your hot tools for special occasions and when you do use them distribute a heat protectant throughout your strands first. Not only do heat protectants create a barrier between your strands and the high temps from your hot tools they can also help you to achieve shinier, glossier results when you're finished styling!

Use Hair Oils

If you don't already, now is the time to incorporate hair oils into your styling routine...especially if you want your brunette shade to shine. Hair oils help to replenish the strand with moisture which in turn, leaves it looking glossy and radiant.

Clarify Once a Month

Not familiar with clarifying shampoos? Allow us to introduce you! Overtime styling product can buildup on the strand, leaving your hair looking lackluster. A clarifying shampoo can help to break down that buildup and give you a clean canvas. Since these formulas can be drying you'll want to limit yourself and only use them once a month and always (always!) follow up with a deep conditioner to replenish moisture.
